A former Miss Universe just became a US citizen and Donald Trump will be furious

The Venezuelan model and actress Alicia Machado is becoming a US citizen so she can vote against Donald Trump.

Machado was in 1996 named Miss Universe, and it was around that time that abuse from the Republican presidential candidate began. He called her "Miss Piggy", she says, when she gained weight.

Trump has a long history of beauty pageant involvement - sponsorship, ownership and, clearly, being a fan of the world's most beautiful women.

Well, he's a fan of gawping at them at least. But - and this certainly falls in line with sexist and misogynist things the businessman has said in the past - as Machado believes, he doesn't seem to like women much at all.

He hates girls. He considers girls to be less. We have another status to him.

Machado has lived in the US for 20 years, but it was only a few months ago - when Trump was nominated - that she decided to act. She's awaiting her passport and is encouraging others to do the same.

She alleges that she was victimised by Trump, telling ThinkProgress:

He made me feel small. He threatened me, treated me rudely. He called me ‘Ms. Housekeeping’ in front of his friends.

It was like a great monster reappearing in my life. In the beginning, I thought there was no way this loco will ever win. But after the primaries I realized I need to vote. I can’t invite my community to step up if I won’t do it myself.

Machado has passed her citizenship test. She's also teamed up with legendary civil rights activist Dolores Huerta to rally a common cause.

On Wednesday, both joined two pro-immigrant advocacy groups to encourage other Latinos to register to vote for Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, the Washington Post says.

Machado is one of hundreds of thousands who are waiting for passports so they can vote against Trump. Applications for citizenship always increase during presidential election years, but apparently 2016 is uniquely high.

Last month, the model and actress talked to the New York Times about Trump's treatment of women behind the scenes.
