Britney Spears calls out Christina Aguilera for ‘refusing to speak’ out about conservatorship

Britney Spears has called out fellow pop star, and former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Christina Aguilera, for “refusing to speak” about her conservatorship.

Aguilera had been walking the red carpet for the 22nd Latin Grammys in Las Vegas and just as the interviews were winding down, a reporter asked her whether she had been in communication with Spears following the recent ruling to terminate her controversial conservatorship after 13 years.

In response, a member of Aguilera’s team quickly shut down this line of questioning and said: “No, we’re not doing that tonight, I’m sorry.”

As this was happening, Aguilera can be seen pulling a sad face before she replied: “I can’t but I’m happy for her,” and proceed to walk away.

However Billboard’s Jeff Benjamin said it was unfortunate that Spears shared an “out of context” clip as in the full version, viewers can see that the question is only asked once Aguilera’s publicist said they are leaving.

Spears’s fans were angry after the singer took to Instagram to post the interview on her story and wrote a paragraph slating her former co-star for “refusing to speak” about conservatorship, asking “why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about?”

Spears wrote: “I love and adore everyone who supported me… but refusing to speak when you know the truth, is equivalent to a lie !!!! 13 years being in a corrupt abusive system yet why is it such a hard topic for people to talk about ???

“I’m the one who went through it !!!! All the supporters who spoke up and supported me, thank you… yes I do matter !!!!!’

In another story post, Spears sang the praises of another fellow pop star Lady Gaga for openly slamming the conservatorship during an interview.

“I’ve been watching this for a long time, and the way she [Spears] was treated in this business was wrong and the way that women are treated in the music industry is something that I wish would change.”

Gaga goes on to describe how Spears “will forever be an inspiration to women and to people all over the world.”

Spear appeared to be touched by Gaga’s kind words and wrote: “Thank you @LadyGaga for genuinely taking your time to say something so kind. You made me cry !!! I love you !!!”

People have since taken to Twitter to share their thoughts on the beef between Spears and Aguilera.

It’s not the first time Spears and Aguilera have feuded, as rivals in the late 90s and early 2000s the pair exchanged choice words about each other over the years, so fans of the two singers were quick to give their reaction to this latest update.

Who would have thought this feud would be reignited in 2021?

Elsewhere, some took Aguilera’s side and defended her brief response to the question about Spears, noting that her team had just said the interviews were done before a reporter asked the question about Britney.

While others also pointed out that Aguilera has previously been vocal about Spears’ conservatorship and posted a Twitter thread in support of her in June this year - before the conservatorship was terminated.
