A conservative journalist tried to fashion-shame the youngest woman ever elected to congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but was roasted by Twitter users instead.
Ocasio-Cortez shot to fame earlier this year when she unexpectedly defeated ten-term representative Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for New York's 14th district, and she looks set to help shape for course of US politics for years to come.
But just over a week after she was elected to congress, a reporter for the Washington Examiner tweeted a photo taken from behind Ocasio-Cortez and wrote:
Hill staffer sent me this pic of Ocassio-Cortez they took just now. I'll tell you something: that jacket and coat don't look like a girl who struggles.
Eddie Scarry’s tweet came after the 29-year-old congresswoman revealed that she is only able to move to Washington DC once her congressional salary kicks in and she can afford rent.
In a matter of minutes, Twitter users pounced on Scarry’s post to mock him for commenting on Ocasio-Cortez’s outfit.
Other Twitter users responded with memes of ridiculous winter coats.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to Scarry's tweet by reminding her followers of the double standard women in politics face.
But this isn’t the first time the conservative media has criticised the 29-year-old congresswoman for her fashion choices.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is a renowned socialist and had previously worked as an organiser for Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign, was slammed for appearing in an expensive outfit for a magazine shoot before she was elected.
But she quickly pointed out on Twitter that the right doesn’t seem to understand the concept of magazine shoots.
This probably won’t be the last time the conservative media tries to shame Ocasio-Cortez, but at least she knows the internet has her back.
