China is using Donald Trump to mock the idea of western democracy

A Chinese state-run newspaper has written 500 words to mock western democracy, citing Republican nomination frontrunner Donald Trump as Exhibit A.

Monday's editorial in the Global Times opined that the rise of Trump has opened a "Pandora's box", after which the "US faces the prospect of an institutional failure":

The rise of a racist in the US political arena worries the whole world. Usually, the tempo of the evolution of US politics can be predicted, while Trump's ascent indicates all possibilities and unpredictability.

So clearly a one party system is superior.

The editorial continued to produce a checklist of electoral systems' greatest embarrassments.

He has even been called another Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler by some Western media. Mussolini and Hitler came to power through elections, a heavy lesson for Western democracy.

However the comparisons cease there...

Now, most analysts believe the US election system will stop Trump from being president eventually. The process will be scary but not dangerous.

... then the editorial concludes:

The US had better watch itself for not being a source of destructive forces against world peace, more than pointing fingers at other countries for their so-called nationalism and tyranny.

The unwritten implication is that having a choice to vote for Trump, an elite businessmen whose campaign is fuelled by an anti-establishment sentiment that the middle and lower class have been failed by a globalised world run by elite businessmen, is an embarrassing and worrisome situation for democracy, in itself.

The argument is that giving people a choice to vote is foolish, and Trump is their prime evidence for that.

What a time to be alive.
