Now that Article 50 has been triggered, the next step is for Theresa May to negotiate a deal with the EU.
Which is easier said than done. She has two years from now to agree to something.
And while the EU would also be keen to negotiate a deal that is beneficial for both the remaining nations and the UK, it’s easy to see how the power lays in their hands. They have relatively little to lose, and may show resentment to the UK wanting to leave.
EU Council President Donald Tusk may have offered a heartfelt goodbye, but not everyone may be as nice.
According to BBC journalist Nick Bryant, a European diplomat has commented:
Britain has shot itself in the foot. We intend to shoot you in the other.
Ouch.
This does not bode well.
