Ali is an 86-year-old tailor who appears each day in a different outfit. Zoe Spawton is the Berlin-based photographer who's been documenting him.
Their collaboration formed the basis of the acclaimed blog 'What Ali Wore', and would develop into a touching friendship.

Spawton has been taking photos of Ali's fashion choices since 2012, when she posted this photo in August:

First photo! Ali walks past the cafe I work at in Berlin every morning at 9:05am. I’m not sure where he is going, but we always say hello to each other. He always wears such great clothes.
I don’t speak much German and he speaks a little bit of English, but I managed to ask if I could take his photo. He gladly accepted.

At first, as Spawton says, they couldn't communicate much.
But one night, she ran into him on a train on the other side of the city, and managed to glean that he has lived in Berlin for 44 years, is a retired doctor, and has 18 children.

Over the next three years, the pair grew closer.
They attended picnics and weddings together, as well as photographing eachother.

Spawton, who hopes to compile the blog, photos and experience into a book, tells indy100:
My relationship with Ali is unique and surprising. It's especially rewarding seeing as it's quite difficult for us to communicate in broken German!

Getting to know someone from a completely different culture and generation to myself has been wonderful.
