Yesterday Banksy made headlines around the world after pulling off maybe his most audacious stunt to date.
After selling his famous 'Girl with Balloon' painting at Sotheby's for over $1m the secretive artist immediately destroyed his own creation.
As soon as the auctioneer confirmed the sale, an alarm began to sound as the painting started to slip out of the frame and was shredded.
It was fairly obvious what happened but just in case you needed some clarification Banksy explained exactly how he pulled off this prank in a video he shared Instagram.
Reactions to the Banksy stunt have been mostly positive with people revelling in the outrageousness of the stunt and the 'genius' of the artist.
However, thanks to the stunt the artwork is now likely to have doubled in price. Joey Syer, a co-founder of MyArtBroker, told the Daily Mail:
The auction result will only propel this further and given the media attention this stunt has received, the lucky buyer would see a great return on the £1.04million they paid last night.
This is now part of art history in its shredded state and we'd estimate Banksy has added at a minimum 50% increase to it's value, possibly as high as being worth £2million plus.
There has been something of a small backlash against Banksy because of this, with people accusing him of actually being part of the machine that he rallies against.
