Britney Spears breaks silence on controversial documentary and triggers response from #FreeBritney activists

Britney Spears has said she “cried for two weeks” about the contents of a high-profile documentary that explored her career.

The New York Times’ investigative documentary Framing Britney Spears , which aired on Hulu, examined the singer’s meteoric rise to the summit of pop music and subsequent fall and has been one of the most widely discussed events in pop culture this year.

The documentary looked at her mental health struggles from the mid-2000s and her treatment at the hands of the tabloid media.

It also placed intense scrutiny on the Spears’ legal battle to rid herself of the conservatorship that has overseen her finances and personal affairs since 2008. Fans largely believe the documentary created a positive step towards raising awareness about her treatment by the press and the restrictions she lives under.

While Spears, 39, had previous indirectly addressed the series, she has now said on Instagram “I didn’t watch the documentary” but what she has seen of it left her “embarrassed by the light they put me in”.

“I’ve always been so judged... insulted... and embarrassed by the media... and I still am till this day,” she continued in her post.

She said: “I cried for two weeks,” adding, “and well …. I still cry sometimes !!!!”.

The post was accompanied by a video of the singer dancing to Aerosmith, which she joked she does “every day” to “feel wild and human and alive”.

Many of the singer’s dedicated fans have claimed that the singer is not responsible for this statement.

“Not them forcing you to talk smack about the documentary.......” user Norbytalos wrote in the comments section of the post, which received over one thousand likes.

Members of the #FreeBritney movement have also taken to Twitter that the post is not reflective of her actual feelings on the matter. The documentary’s central purpose is to highlight how little authority the singer has been given.

Spears is currently locked in a legal battle with her father Jamie over her conservatorship. He used to oversee both her personal and financial affairs before stepping down from his role over the former due to ill health.

A lawyer for Spears has asked a judge to have her father permanently replaced as personal conservator.

However, Jamie remains co-conservator of his daughter’s financial affairs, an arrangement she is not happy with.

The #FreeBritney movement has been supported by the likes of Cher, Miley Cyrus and Sarah Jessica Parker.
