Stranger Things teen star Gaten Matarazzo is feeling the fury of the internet, after it was announced he is hosting a new prank show on Netflix which involves tricking people who are looking for work.
The actor, best known for his role as Dustin in Stranger Things , will not only appear in but also act as an executive producer on the eight-episode show called Prank Encounters. It is set to launch on Netflix later this year.
In a press release on Friday, the streaming service described Prank Encounters as a "terrifying and hilarious prank show" that messes with strangers who think they are starting their first day at the new job. Netflix representative said:
Each episode of this terrifying and hilarious prank show takes two complete strangers who each think they're starting their first day at a new job.
It's business as usual until their paths collide and these part-time jobs turn into full-time nightmares.
Sadly, this is not a joke and many people took to social media to vent their frustration with the actor and Netflix, with some saying it sounded "like a Black Mirror episode".
Some pleaded with the child actor to cancel or reconsider the show as it is "creating real harm" to a group of people that are already really struggling.
Other's mocked the concept, writing up mock comparisons that are equally as cruel.
In a statement given to Indy100 , a Netflix spokesperson said:
The pranks in Prank Encounters are spooky, supernatural, and over the top, and everyone had a great time.
All participants came in with the expectation this was a one-day, hourly gig and everyone got paid for their time.
Season 3 of Stranger Things will be released on July 4.
