Marvel stars left baffled after Trump’s Space Force announces members will be called ‘Guardians’

On Friday, vice president Mike Pence announced what enlistees for the much-maligned Space Force will be called and it is ‘Guardians.’

In a tweet posted on Friday by Space Force they confirmed the news writing, “Today, after a yearlong process that produced hundreds of submissions and research involving space professionals and members of the general public, we can finally share with you the name by which we will be known: Guardians.”

It added in subsequent tweets that the name Guardians has a long history in space operations dating back to 1983 adding that the name ‘connects our proud heritage and culture to the important mission we execute 24/7, protecting the people and interest of the U.S. and its allies.’

Pence also confirmed the name at an event celebrating the first birthday of the Space Force. The vice president said, “As I mentioned, we just returned from the Oval Office. And so it is my honor, on behalf of the President of the United States, to announce that, henceforth, the men and women of the United States Space Force will be known as 'Guardians.'”

Space Force has largely been seen as one of the most ridiculous elements of Trump’s presidency mostly because they seem to perceive space as some sort of warzone and the fact that the logo is almost identical to the one seen in Star Trek

So the announcement that the members of the Space Force will be called the 'Guardians’ left some completely baffled and yes there was ridicule.

More than one person noticed that this name had a striking similarity to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which might have been a pure coincidence but it didn’t stop there being further jokes.

James Gunn, who directed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies also had his say, asking if he could ‘sue this dork?’ which was possibly aimed at Pence.

Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the Guardians movies, also responded to the news and has subsequently changed his name to Vice President Drax on Twitter.

Given that Trump has just a month left of his presidency it remains to be seen what will happen next with Space Force but there is no doubting that it has given us many chuckles.
