When it comes to food, the UK’s reputation is mixed to say the least.

Yes, cities like London and Manchester might be home to some of the most highly-rated restaurants in the world, but some of our traditional cuisine it’s admittedly a little lacking.

Sure, we’ve got roast dinners and full English breakfasts, but one old-school British dish is currently leaving our transatlantic cousins feeling pretty disgusted...

Pie and mash might be an East London classic, but it’s not winning over diners in the US if TikTok is anything to go by.

It comes after the TikTok account @londonhotspots posted a video showcasing a traditional pie and mash shop in Romford.

The clip highlighted the value for money the restaurant offered, with the woman in the footage saying: "£5 for pie, mash and liquor? I'm sorry I can't remember the last time I ate anywhere that cheap."

The video explained the options on the simple menu, which included minced beef pies and mashed potato – with a choice between the green parsley sauce known as liquor and gravy.

It’s a staple of every cockney’s diet, but plenty of social media users were not impressed.

The X/Twitter account @messedupfoods shared the video with the caption "British food isn’t real".

“I get that it’s affordable… however, why does it look like the kind of food served at a maximum security correctional services facility?” one user wrote, replying to the video.

Another said: “Having travelled a large part of the globe, I consider English food a true war crime.”

We’ll stand up for proper British cuisine – but clearly, the internet does not agree.
