Professor Stephen Hawking was a loud critic of Donald Trump.
The award-winning theoretical physicist took multiple opportunities in the years before he died to speak out against the US president on a multitude of issues, including the infamous travel ban.
But it was something he said when the former reality TV star pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement that ought to be looked over again.
Talking to BBC News, he said:
We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump's action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of 250 degrees, and raining sulphuric acid.
Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it's one we can prevent if we act now.
By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children
In fact, though his extensive knowledge helped him and the rest of the world make sense of the vast universe(s!), he was once quoted saying the US president’s popularity was “beyond” even his understanding.
In an interview with ITV’S Good Morning Britain, he told Piers Morgan:
I can’t… he’s a demagogue, who seems to appeal to the lowers common denominator.
