A Florida teacher was fired because she refused to give students in her class credit for homework that they failed to turn in, bringing the United States education system back under the microscope.

Diane Tirado, 52 year-old social studies teacher at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, said her giving students a zero disregarded the school's "no zero" policy.

In an interview with The New York Post, Tirado said:

I was not allowed to give anything lower than a 50.

Her student's first assignment of the semester was to keep a journal where they were required to take down notes about historical events and draw maps in what Tirado likened to an "explorer's notebook".

Ms Tirado has been praised by many people, including teachers, for her actions

People on Reddit were especially supportive of her.
