The president of the United States is a loud-and-proud billionaire real estate mogul, a bizarre gold-door aficionado and a man so self-celebratory there exists a Wikipedia article entitled 'List of things named after Donald Trump'.

So what ostentatious riches beyond any money-strapped imagination would he bestow upon Melania for her birthday? Well, flowers and a card. See? Not so different from the little guy he claims to represent.

The gift - presumably not beyond his wife's wildest dreams and instead nestled firmly at the bottom of any fantasised present pile - was a result of his being "very busy", the President explained on Thursday's Fox and Friends:

Well I better not get into that because I may get in trouble.

Maybe I didn’t get her so much. I got her a beautiful card.

You know I’m very busy to be running out looking for a present.

He later added that he'd also bought "beautiful flowers" on top of the card to mark the start of his wife's 49th year on this Earth. Lucky woman.

To be fair to the so-called leader of the free world, he has miraculously squeezed in 104 visits to golf clubs since his inauguration in January 2017, a number totted up by to Trump Golf Count.

That wouldn't leave much time to pop to the shops. Or, seemingly, fix-up his relationship with his wife: an awkward video emerged earlier this week of Melania seemingly avoiding holding Trump's hand in an awkward 'pinky dance'.

The First Lady is said to have been "furious" with the president earlier this year when further allegations of her husband's extra-marital affairs emerged.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels claims she paid $130,000 by Donald Trump’s lawyer in "hush money", a sum she has offered to pay back in order to speak freely about her alleged affair with the President.

Trump has denied the affair, which Daniels alleged started in 2006 and went well into 2007.
