Pit bull dogs have a controversial reputation and certain breeds are banned in a number of countries, including the UK.

Buddy the pitbull became an overnight Twitter sensation after his owner, a young woman called Alyssa Lopez, posted some photos of him online, with the following caption:

My dog is banned in 40 countries around the world and 937 cities in the US because he’s "aggressive". Here's the face of a killer everybody.

People quickly followed up with photos of their own pit bulls:

Pupper.

Many pit bull types were bred for fighting and baiting, and a number of organisations claim that the dogs have a more violent temperament than other breeds. Their strong jaws mean that they can cause considerable damage, and this has been documented through the ages.

Alyssa told Buzzfeed News that she had found Buddy on the streets a few months ago, and though they found his owners, they no longer wanted him.

She said:

He is the sweetest dog, has a huge heart and would never hurt a soul.

She insists that the actions of dogs reflect that of their owners.

It’s bizarre to me that a dog could be so discriminated against.
