We may have known that the Free Britney movement is one of the only issues upon which all sides of the political spectrum agree, but we still didn’t expect someone like Matt Gaetz to get involved.

The Republican politician, who is currently under federal investigation for sex trafficking and sex with a minor, joined supporters outside a Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday as Britney Spears contested her conservatorship inside.

“Everytime there’s a hearing in this case that does not result in freedom for Britney Spears, the dissolution of this guardianship, it is a black eye on the American justice system,” he said to the mass of Free Britney activists who roared with support in response.

“There were grifters in this process who tried to act like they spoke for Britney. That they knew what she wanted. Well now, the whole world knows what Britney Spears wants, and it is the freedom and the liberty to be offered to every single American. Free Britney,” he continued, much to the crowd’s excitement.

“Britney’s been abused by the media, she’s been abused by a grifter father, and she has been abused by the American justice system. And so we need to come together and create ... federal change in the law that will free Britney and the millions of Americans who are impacted by a corrupt guardianship system that empowers people to take advantage of the weak.”

“That is what we stand for, and that should unite all Americans,” he added, seemingly acknowledging the awkward political divide. “One thing we can all agree on is that Jamie Spears is a d***.”

Many are assuming that Gaetz chose to hop on the Free Britney bandwagon in an attempt to distract from the Senator’s own assorted scandals, though Gaetz was one of several GOP representatives who invited Spears to contest her conservatorship before Congress on June 30, per The Hill.

That said, people are still confused by Gaetz’s involvement.

Some cheekily acknowledged his alleged history with minors.

But others pointed out the biggest potential problem of all: Gaetz is quite literally under federal investigation for allegedly egregious crimes, and his involvement could very well damage any good that does get done.

In the famous words of Chris Crocker: Gaetz, please leave Britney alone.
