Donald Trump attempted to make light of his own suggestion of buying Greenland from Denmark in a bizarre joke that keeps on giving.
The US president took to Twitter and shared a doctored photo of a giant Trump Tower built over a small village in the Arctic territory.
He captioned the photo:
I promise not to do this to Greenland.
His latest attempt at humour comes after he told reporters on Sunday that he was “strategically” interested in a deal, though it wasn’t a priority for his administration. He told reporters:
It’s not number one on the burner.
In response Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen let Trump know that Greenland was not for sale and his idea of buying it was “an absurd discussion.”
“Greenland is not Danish. Greenland is Greenlandic,” she added firmly.
Trump’s awkward joke was funny for all the wrong reasons
