A simple gesture of kindness can often go a long way, and that's exactly what a young restaurant worker in Texas learned earlier this week.
18-year-old Evoni Williams was working a shift at Waffle House in La Marque, Texas, on 3 March, when an elderly customer asked for her assistance.
The gentleman, who was sitting at the counter, was having trouble cutting his food as he struggled with difficulties in his hands.
Without hesitation, Evoni cut the man's food for him, but unbeknownst to her the moment was captured by Laura Wolf, who shared the heartwarming act on Facebook.
The image soon went viral earning more than 60,000 shares and even the City of La Marque page posted the image, proud to promote the kindness of one of their citizens.
Speaking to KHOU 11, Evoni explained that she was using the money earned at the job to fund her higher education, and said that the 78-year-old man's request was no big deal.
She said:
He was like, 'My hands are not functioning too well.'
He needed me to cut his food. And I did.
It’s something I would do any other day.
However, Avoni's small but incredible act was awarded in an amazing fashion.
Not only has the City of La Marque dedicated an entire day to the teenager, but Texas Southern University has granted her a $16,000 scholarship, which will help her enrol at the school.
USA Todayreports that the University has assigned a counsellor to help Avoni begin her degree, which is said to be in business management.
