A heroic bystander who tackled an alleged gunman during the Bondi Beach mass shootings has been praised on social media around the world after footage of the moment was shared online.
New South Wales Police have confirmed that 12 people have died in the shooting, including one suspected gunman. The other alleged shooter is in police custody and injured. The shooting took place as Jewish families gathered to celebrate Hanukkah.
Footage of the clip appears to show a man disarming one of the suspected terrorists, before pointing the rifle at him and forcing him to retreat.
The hero, said to be a 43-year-old fruit shop owner from Sutherland Shire, sustained two bullet wounds to his arm and hand but is recovering well in hospital, according to reports.
Speaking about the man, Chris Minns, the premier of New South Wales, said the man was a “genuine hero”.
“A man walking up to gunman who had fired on the community and single handedly disarming him, putting his own life at risk to save the lives of countless other people,” he added.
“That man is a genuine hero and I’ve no doubt that there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery.”
The footage has been shared on social media, with thousands of people around the world celebrating his incredible bravery.
Political broadcaster Jon Sopel was one of the countless people to react to the footage, writing: "Whoever the guy in the white top is, give him a medal. There is good and evil in ten seconds of footage."
One wrote: "Give this man a medal a real hero."
A user wrote: “The best and worst of humanity in one frame.”
“Brave beyond words,” one said.
Meanwhile, a family member interviewed outside a major Sydney hospital where victims from the attack were being treated said relatives would be allowed to see him soon, adding: “We hope he will be fine, he is a hero, 100 per cent, he is a hero.”
